About Us

The Wisconsin Stern Steerers Association is a group of highly committed ice boaters dedicated to the promotion, restoration, and competition of stern-steerers, the grand ice yachts that ruled the ice until the advent of the single-pilot boats.

"The renaissance of the big boats, especially the big A Boats, is one of the best stories in our sport in recent years."

Sighting
Via Todd Knopp: Eric Sawyer was seen doing the final cutting of bulkheads getting ready for glue up of the cage. Jessie and Eric work on the third cockpit for the new Michigander.

Rumors Confirmed!
The rumored Michigander is now fact and not fiction. Chip and Eric stopped by and wood was selected, sawed, and now two side boards are glued up. The designer (Felix) is now expected to stop by soon to make sure the progress is up to specification.

Cabbage Patch goes Soft (water)
Via Keith Haas:
With a lack of new iceboats projects to start, the Cabbage Crew decided to work on Uber Alles, a soft water Rancher 41. Built in England in 1969, we decided that it was time to plane off the gelcoat bottom and put a new bottom on her. Saturday was the “dirty job” of planing off the glass. Wednesday night we buzzed the bottom with dustless sanders to provide a smooth bottom. We are all itching and suffering from the glass fibers and we are working on yet another episode of “This Old Boat”.

Saturday, Rick and Todd are flying off to East Islip, New York for the day. I wonder what they’ll end up bringing back with them. It is a dangerous thing when you have a few extra square feet of space in the cabbage patch.

It is rumored that Eric Sawyer is visiting the Cabbage Patch from Michigan starting on Monday. Time to make some sawdust. Stay tuned for a new episode in A Class stern steerers. Is there a gluing party in your future?? Time will tell.

UPDATE: Seen at the SIBC swap meet, fresh bulkheads (allegedly) for the new Michigander.

Internet Big Boat Rumor Disseminated UPDATED
Received this mysterious email today from an iceboat.org operative who wishes to remain anonymous and undercover:
"Rumor has it that Felix (Yaeso) has the bulkheads cut for the new Michigander, a new A-stern steerer patterned after Haywire. Rumored to be a 45 foot hull with three cockpits. Mated with the plank built recently and the new mast. It should be a formidable yacht."

Secret plans? Here's Sail Plan One and Sail Plan Two.

Cabbage Patch Update: The Michigander Mast

December 19, 2006
Last year, the Mike Peters family donated a trophy to the WSSA. The WSSA had the trophy completely restored and it will become the WSSA overall trophy.
